SALVETE

To all who bear an affection to the Roman Netherlands a cordial salute!

Who are we?

Allow us to introduce ourselves: We are the Living Roman History Group CORBVLO (V is pronounced as U. The Romans used one letter for both consonances.) LRHG Corbvlo is a small group of passionate persons, who try to re-awaken the history of the Roman past. We do this by historical re-enactment: Visits and demonstrations in costume at schools, museums, archaeological digs and at historical theme parks. For example: museum Oriëntalis in Nijmegen, the Historical Open Air museum in Eindhoven and in particular the theme park Archeon in Alphen aan den Rijn. We feature in several historical documentaries for film and television. And we gladly want to co-operate with other Roman groups whether they are from the Netherlands or other countries.

What do we want to do?

The members of LRHG Corbvlo hope that through their efforts more people can learn about the broad aspects of the ancient Roman culture, and way of life. This objective is explicitly educational, without political or religious interests. We gladly share our enthusiasm for and our knowledge of the Roman Empire with you. The members of Corbvlo are true amateurs. This means they have a deep passion for Roman history and will spend many hours of *their spare time on this hobby. The end result is that they are able to present small professional theatrical shows and demonstrations.

The Roman Netherlands

Our group is based in The Netherlands. Thus we concentrate particularly on the Roman period in our country (50 B.C. to 400 A.D.)  During this period in history the Netherlands fell within the boundaries of the Roman province Germania Inferior. The Rhine river formed the northern border of the empire. The Dutch area was populated by Roman legionaries and auxiliary troops which were Batavians, Cananefates and Frisians. A lot of discoveries have been made in this geographical area over the years. The LRHG Corbvlo group is always looking for ways to bring these discoveries to life.

Gnaevs Domitivs Corbvlo

The name of our group has been borrowed from the Roman general Gnaevs Domitivs Corbvlo. For The Netherlands Gnaevs Domitivs Corbvlo became important when he took command of all military and civil affairs of the roman province Germania Inferior, by request of Emperor Claudius in 47 AD. His name will be forever connected to the Corbvlo canal. This canal, which runs through the tribal area of the Cananefates, connected the river Rhine and the Maas. The canal was dug on his orders.

What we don’t do

L.R.H.G. Corbvlo however is not an organization to perform at parties. Our primary goal is historical re-enactment, and education. Activities that have nothing to do with this, like the “toga party for bachelors”, will therefore not be on our calendar.

Historical research.

To be able to make our performances not only nice to look at but also historically correct, our members do historical research. They search both ancient and modern literature and visit museums and archaeological sites. An important source of information is also experimental archaeology. Every group member is (or is becoming) a specialist on his or her own area of interest.

Men and women, soldiers, citizens and a RANGE (scale) of subjects

The combination military and civil was typically Roman. This combination is also typical for the LRHG Corbvlo. The group chooses explicitly to bring not just the military aspects of the Roman time under the attention of the public. Civil matters such as, lawsuits, music, medicine, engineering, vogue, food, religion, governing, slavery and literature are also part of our program. The group therefore consists of citizens and soldiers, men and women.

Corbvlo in the classroom

With the program “Corbvlo in the classroom” students of all ages can learn about a host of aspects of the Roman way of life for (and) men and women. For example, special attention can be given to Roman medicine, to Roman cooking etc.

Knowledge centre

By practicing their hobby the members of LRHG Corbvlo have collected a lot of knowledge concerning a lot of Roman subjects. This knowledge is gladly shared with others. We invite everyone who wants to, to use Corbvlo as a knowledge centre. Mail your Roman question to and we will answer it to the best off our ability.

Membership? We are in search of passionate persons who want to share knowledge with members and the general public

Corbvlo wants to be known as a group of enthusiastic specialists in the field of Roman re-enactment. Our primary goal is quality and not quantity. Therefore you will not find an application form for we are not out to have as many members as possible. However, if you have had for quite some time a real passion for, and knowledge about a certain Roman subject we cordially ask you to contact us. Perhaps you will be interested in joining us. Together we would be able to further develop our passion and hobby. Your own knowledge will increase as well as that of our members and the general public.
